The space station crew eventually had to eat spicy food grown in space.

Take the fajitas. Add the slot watered tomatoes and artichokes. Add it to your flour tortillas, top with Hatch Chile, you'll take months to grow. Do all this while orbiting the Earth on the International Space Station. And that's the recipe for Taco Space.

Astronauts aboard the ISS indulge in special treats after harvesting peppers that have been planted on the ISS since July. These plants come from NuMex "Española Improved" seeds, which are Hatch chile hybrids. Hatch refers to a city and region in New Mexico known for its chili peppers.

NASA astronaut Megan McArthur tweeted Friday about tasting both red and green Chile. (The peppers will turn red as they last longer on the plants) and shared a photo of the tacos she made. which she describes as “My best space tacos ever”

Astronauts mix some serious science to go along with the snacks. “The investigation involves microbial analysis to improve our understanding of the interactions between plants and microbes in space. and evaluation of the taste, texture and crew nutrition of the first peppers grown in space," NASA said in a statement.

Astronauts plant lettuce, kale and white cabbage in orbit. The space agency describes the Chilean festival as "One of the most sophisticated plant experiments to date on the station due to its long germination and growth time.
